BMW Z3: Repairing the leather seat and seat belt guide
I tried repairing the seatbelt guide on my 2002 Z3 3.0i with the seat still in the car. That was a no-go. So I removed the seat, took off the leather, and repaired it the RIGHT way.
I show you how in about 12 minutes. Chapter times below.

BMW Z3 Antenna base. Repair and MOD!

Lots of Z3 owners have seen this: a small push against the antenna the wrong way and it snaps off the top of the antenna base. I read about fixing it online and heard it was a really difficult job. You know what? I thought the entire job was easy, and it went pretty quick. Afterwards, I added a tiny new antenna mod, and I think it looks pretty cool! But mainly, since it's so much shorter, it's ...

New OEM headlights for my car cost over $1200! Nope. I decided to spend $10 on a polishing kit, and try polishing the old cloudy headlights. Here's how it turned out. Why? I installed the Smartswitch by DigiSync. It lets you connect your headlamp straight to the battery and bypass the turn signals, horn, ignition switch, etc... Not only do you get a brighter headlight, you also save all those other components from the high current that the headlamp requires. This is a quick mod. I could probably have done it in under 10 minutes.

you know what…I have a GL1200 and 6 Carbs are way too much!! is like to have 6 kids
lol. You're probably right. It could be done much simpler. But I sure love the way they look above that big flat 6. There's a conversion kit out there to switch to injection. That could be a fun project one day.
Leonardo what happend with te Valkyrie? I don't see more videos about your bike
hi lyonardo, vey nice Bike. my queastion is not the carburator, question is where and haow can i buy the seat railing for 1998 valkyrie??
Hello Mr Leonardo I have a Valkyrie F6 and one of the cylinders is filling with gas, first thought was that I need to replace the petcock valve however after seen your video I believe I have to replace those springs as well. Thanks for your video is very helpful.
What is in the middle 0:54 Orange lights? Turn indicator?
voltmeter. Very handy if you have a lot of extra electronics installed. Especially for the winter months when I plug in the heated suit. Never want to get caught with a drained battery. I replaced it with a digital readout later.
@@lyunardo Nice, would look nice as fuel gauge or gear indicator. Cheers Philip from Norway
@@philip4588 actually it's just a generic meter. It It can be out of those things, depending on the sending unit you attach. It was cheap too
What means if float needle valve spring is weak and hardly any tension. So no bounce is found. Not to be used?
Definitely replace it ASAP if the spring is weak. Having said that, I haven't seen your specific hardware, so I can't give a real recommendation. But I think that any time you have that assembly out, just go ahead and replace all of these parts. It's no fun removing the carbs, and the parts aren't very expensive. But getting hydrolocked is a pain at best. And a disaster at worst. Good luck!
So there is one zipper on back, and only hooks thru the seat in front , 3 sections (lines) , every section has 3 hooks? And that was? Great work dude! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 ❤
Nice job installing. Your soothing calm voice makes me believe I can do it. 👍🏻
Step by step and absolutely clear. Thanks!
What’s the part number
Unfortunately Joop died. Me and some other people put some alternatives in the comments below. You shouldn't have to scroll too far to find them. Good luck
shitty work before way better
I'm several hours into changing my antenna at this point. The antenna base is still about half an inch too low for an original antenna to screw into, even when I shove it all the way up... May have to remove the grommet and try again.
My antenna kit came with several different adapters to change the height. I show them in this video, and highlight which one worked for me,and why. Good luck!
One more comment: I did have to remove the rubber dome shaped piece in order to get it all together. I just went ahead and replaced it. The part number is in the notes. Once again, all of this is in the video. If you just skimmed through it like I do, you may have missed some important steps. Let us know how it goes.
@@lyunardo I get you. The aftermarket antennas are much easier to install than the originals. With the original you've got to get that VERY tight fit in with the grommet to the body - shoved into place from the outside - and then a VERY tight squeezing the tip of the antenna assembly INTO the grommet - pushing from inside the quarter panel. One can reasonably do one or the other - stick the grommet (by itself) into the quarter panel, OR, shove the antenna assembly (by itself) into the free floating grommet. Working within the confines and awkward positioning of the inside of the quarter panel and having to shove those two together - - - well, I haven't accomplished it yet. What I'll try next (once my patience returns to me) is to perhaps scuff out/ slightly widen, and/or lubricate the grommet entry hole so that once the grommet is in place in the body of the car, the antenna assembly can be pushed in from below without using superhuman strength. May God help me :)
@@ziparis Now that you mention it, I think that I had a problem with that rubber seal that inserts into the body at the top. I had it twisted around a little, so the spacing was off. Once I got it lined up facing the rear, I was able to screw the original antenna in. That confirmed the angle was correct, so I could get my stubby aftermarket piece in.
Best thumbnail pic ever. I’m not even a fan of green, but that was just so good.
Thanks, I learned to paint just so I could get that exact color. lol
How do you pull the stock plastic lid off the stock subwoofer box? I don't want to break mine. Does it have a hinge? Should it be pulled straight up, from the front, from the back? How much resistance should there be? Thanks.
It depends on the year, and the trim model. Mine is just held on by spring clips. It pulls straight up. Other years, it's not removable from the top. The front pulls off. Others are different. I always google the "parts fiche" for every vehicle I work on. Include the exact year, date, model, engine size, and you'll get a break down of how parts fit together.
@@lyunardo Parts fiche? What is that? I don't find any hits on Google.
@@tayler2396 that's strange. That's exactly how I find diagrams for every vehicle I own. Maybe type parts diagram, same thing. Example: "parts fiche 2000 honda valkyrie 1500 standard" When I google for any vehicle, I get hundreds of results. Good luck.
Where can I get one of those for my 98 Honda Valkyrie? I love my bike but it's kind of a pain not having a fuel gauge
Nice work, but have you figured out how to keep those bloody things from breaking again?
Easy peasy. Just never wear the seatbelts.
Were can I purchase the gas ga
i have a 2000 honda shadow sabre and i thought that was a unit of a bike for me, but holy jesus this is a monster of a bike
You made it look easy! Excellent work! Thanks for the clear video!
I really wonder how a hydrolock (fuel running into float bowls, needle not seating and flow of fuel geting into cylinders and or engine) can even occur with the vacuum requirements of the petcock for fuel to flow in the first place. ???
Just bought bike been sitting for 2 years runs perfect when sprayed. Is there anyway I can avoid removing these six carbs and clean them while they are attached? Tks
Negative. Remove them, rebuild them. It’s not as bad as you think. The danger of doing it yourself is the connect rod that connects both banks of carbs. Super critical to not bend it. Do one carb at a time. There is a 6 carb sync tool online. To send the carbs out and get them tuned is like $1,300. But the fella that does the turning to the carb has a flow bench set up and really dials them in.
I hate to say this but either this guy is single or his wife don't like to ride and she lets him spend as much as he wants on his ride which if that's the case your a lucky man dude
lol. I was single back then. But I never had a relationship where I had to get permission to do my hobbies. Me and my lady are both creative, so we expect that we'll be spending time on projects.
I went looking for the cleaner/sealer today and surprised no one carries this stuff. Auto parts, home stores, canvas supply... nobody had it. Finally found 303 at West Marine supply. I'm going to apply it tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
Where I live, it costs more at marine supply stores, and there aren't any nearby. But Oreily's auto supply always has it in stock these days. And for the best price too. But Amazon sells it for just a few bucks more.
Hey I have a question. Do you have an email or something?
Could you tell me where you got the parts from please thanks Kevin
Great post and I found a new beach because of it. I never liked these in white but yours has me rethinking that. Actually shopping for my first z3 this week. Trying to decide between the 3.0 and the M. Ive heard there really isn't that much more power to the M but I really like the styling elements. I'm confused by your car though. I thought you had the M because of the seats but looking at your car more closely I can see it's a standard z3. Are those the leather covers I've seen on the web? Thanks.
You're right. It's a 3.0i, not an M. There's only an 18 hp difference. So not that much. No seat covers. Those are the oregon leather sports seats. An option for that year. Good luck in finding a 3.0i or an M. For some reason, they've doubled and tripled in value recently. Depending on the mileage. I've seen them from 20 to 30k.
Yea, mine isn't cheap unfortunately but just 27,000 miles. Picking it up in Chicago next week. Its metallic silver with the 3.0 engine. Its in good shape but needs a stereo. I'm leaning towards a detachable face Kenwood with cd and Bluetooth. What do you have in yours.
@@gforcepdx I got the Kenwood kmm-bt head unit, Don't remember which Kenwood amp. Alpine tweeters in the foot well, and Alpine full range behind the seats.
Where did you order this from I've searched but can't seem to find where I can order it from
check the comments below. This one isn't available anymore. It was handmade by a man who passed away. But there are several mentions of what to search for to find one like it. good luck!
Just picked up a 97 valk, 39k miles, I love the gauge, interesting but a cool addition! Was gonna ask what bags those were?
They're called the Jumbo Strong Hard bags. Made by Tsukayu. I had a neighbor who used to call my bike my "other truck" because he'd see me pulling all my grocery shopping out of those bags. lol. www.tsukayu.com/jumbo%20strong%20_valkyrie.html
Thank you so much for your instructions, they really help me to look after my lovely old Valk!
Should show this some of the Makers here on RUclips. I'm sure someone would love to tear into this thing to see what makes it tick and how to duplicate it. It's quite an ingenius piece of kit.
I'm not sure, but I believe that a company called LSK made a deal with his estate. They're putting out a version that looks like it's based off his design. Plus several other companies are making something similar now. Lots of options out there since I made this video.
I know this is probably a longshot cause this video‘s been out quite some time however I would love to find that fuel gauge seeing how I just purchased my 98 Valkyrie which I’ve been looking for for a long time if there’s anyway you could send me a link to that gauge I would much appreciate it and it was a great video
Unfortunately, the engineer who used to build these died a while back and this isn't available anymore. Good news is that, since I made this video there's a few companies who sell something similar. If you google something like "hydrostatic fuel gauge motorcycle" you'll find a few options out there. Good luck.
@@lyunardo thank you for the info sorry to hear about the passing of this gentleman
Cool I had a z3 2001 I miss it I’m looking for one I would actually like to have my old one back! Thanks for the video
What a fckn mission. That's a terrible design.
I used super glue and it looks just the same with 1/10th the surgery and holds strong
Nice! I couldn't make it work on mine. But it worked out okay. It only took me 30 minutes total to do my passenger seat. Taking off the leather cover and putting it back on is not bad at all, once you learn how it's done.
Thank you man
Great video and clean z3! Thank you 🙏
I have a 1997 Z3. I have been trying to figure out how to remove the top plastic cover to gain access to the sub woofer area. I have not seen any videos that address that. I am always concerned about breaking plastic when working on interior trim pieces. Anyone know of any videos that show that?
In this video I show how to address it in mine, but it's a 2002. Is yours a lot different? I think that first year James Bond version is considered to be even more desirable than the final year with the 3.0. Congrats!
what fairing is that?
Wide Open Customs. It came unpainted and you have to attach all the hardware. Fun project for FYI guys
Hey, I notice your z3 has a speaker on to top between the roll bars. The plastic around mine cracked and some are off and I can't find replacement anywhere. Did you do that custom?
Yep, I replaced it with the 8" Kicker sub. I found the wooden enclosure on Etsy, but should've just made it myself. Very simple to do. I made a video of the entire install. Check it out for details.
Thank you I shall!
Currently buying a 2000 Z3M! Seller replaced the original top but, the mildew smell is already present... the sealing lesson is very helpful!! Where'd you get your products?
How to connect the M seat to the car and activate the heated seat function?
I looked into swapping out my seats a few years ago. As I remember, it depends on the year. Newer years should be plug and play. Older years have different pin outs. You should join the Z3 group on www.bimmerforums.com/. If you ask there, I bet you'll get the answer in a day or two. Good luck!
How mych did you pay
about $185 total. The base was about 160 on it's own.
Where can I get one ??
This one was just hand made by the engineer who created it. Now there are several different companies who make something similar. If you look through the comments, a few companies were mentioned. Or you can just google something like "pressure sensor fuel gauge for motorcycles" Good luck
Is this unit universal too any bike ? Or specific bikes only ?
This one is calibrate for that specific tank. Now there are other brands available online for other bikes. People have posted in the comments, so you can find there. Or yo can just google something like "fuel pressure fuel gauge", and the name of your bike. Good luck.
Beautiful bike have newish old 15 Honda Valkyrie fantastic hate they quit making them
um in this case.. the cover is already broken. why not just break it further and use some channel locks or a suitable socket head?
Good question. The point was to try out this tool. I'd been meaning to buy one for a while, and this was a good excuse. The price is pretty low. I've used it a few more times on my 25 year old bike. It's great for stuck posts, or bolts with the head broken off.
@@lyunardo gotcha. Yeah I was looking for a review on this thing myself. I've always used the two nut method over the years but this customer has a half broken off stud.
My leather seats have worn badly from my wallet and rain on my seats.
Replacing the leather covering is really easy. I just did the passenger side seat belt holder, and it took me about 30 minutes to take the leather off, put the new piece on, then put it all back together.
@@lyunardo really, that great to know. I asked a local leather shop that does that stuff and when I said BMW they noped out saying they would never touch another BMW. I know motor and drive train work is easy. Do you know of a good seat skin supplier?
